One of the things about autism is that you can feel the pain of the world around you very deeply and it really hurts seeing the state of everything. Like why can’t people be nice and decent? And no, I reject that being ‘overly simplistic’. Why is that ‘simplistic’? Why is the world so mean?

My ONLY point here is: Autistic people are a significant minority population. Our needs & concerns ought to be heard & given consideration. We shouldn’t be treated as anomalous outliers.

By current estimates, #autistic people make up 3.2% of the US population. The real number is almost certainly higher, as we catch up with previous underdiagnosis. For comparison, here are the approximate sizes for some other groups: Jewish: 2.4% Muslim: 1-1.3% Transgender: 1% Native: 2-2.9%

This doll has some very thoughtful features. In addition to accessories used by many autistic people, it also has super-soft, loose clothing (for sensory reasons), joints that allow for a wider degree of movement (to allow stimming & flapping), & an averted gaze (eye contact hurts). 3/4

These aren’t stereotypes, they’re nods to common (not universal) autistic experiences. Many autistic people use AAC, move differently than non-autistic people, or have accessories that visibly mark us as autistic, like headphones. I’m glad this doll exists for the kids who will feel seen by it. 4/4
