I don't think autism necessarily "gets worse" as you get older (though executive function sure can). I think it's more so that every failed interaction is another cut, until you're eventually just too traumatized to dare make another mistake. So you stop trying, and lose what little ability is left.

So many criticism of Neurodiversity rely on strawmen arguments about what neurodiversity is. People in the neurodiversity movement don't think it's "just quirks" nor do they think being neurodivergent is incompatible with having real, measurable difficulties they would like to not have.

The failure of a school to be an accommodating environment providing enough support for the student to succeed is misdiagnosed as the child being a bad kid who deserves further suffering. (If a kid is having an autistic meltdown for instance, I assure you they are suffering plenty already.)

I get this too. I feel that as autistic people we see ourselves as always learning and enthusiastic, always marveling at our favourite things, and it can make us read as amateurs to people who associate enthusiasm with youth and immaturity.

There's a lot of misinformation and assumptions about autism but I just want to be perfectly clear that some of us really don't care about trains.
