For people who can mask well, a person's disability may seem like a minor inconvenience to outsiders, but it impacts every aspect of a person's life. We cope by developing strategies that work for us, mitigate risks and do what we can. But it is extra work that's required to function effectively.

Some abled parents of disabled people are the most violent ableists. They use their children as tools to demonstrate their heroism in shouldering the burden of taking care of a disabled person, think they’re incapable of ableism, and say the experience of a caretaker is the same as being disabled.

That's what's so very frustrating about autism: you can be extremely smart or capable at things but the big challenge is trying to figure out how to let that get through all the social and sensory barriers. And then you feel bad when people ask "why can't you do this?"

We just had our parent-teacher conference for our #autistic 1st grader, & it was so positive! She was having a tough time at the beginning of the year, but she’s been working SO HARD on her emotional regulation & coping skills, & the teachers have adapted to her pace, as well. She’s doing great 😊
