so, i'm troubled with the idea that one can judge the "success" of an adoption in terms of what the adoptee is willing to avow about it. the difficulty of finding safety to explore and interrogate these feelings is a consequence of the upheavals and disorderings adoption itself causes.

i cannot overstate how unsafe it is for adoptees to be candid and honest with *anyone*: the public at large, their friends, ESPECIALLY their adoptive families--even themselves. i spent four decades pushing all of it as far down as i could.

Let's do our best to love each other through our endless forgivable flaws today, eh.

I’ve been “lucky” in my adoption because my adoptive parents TOLD ME that I’m adopted. That’s how low the bar was. Some people don’t even get that much information about their OWN IDENTITY

drop the sentimentality and look at adoption for what it is: an extraordinary exercise of state power over a basic identity-defining set of relations among human beings: kinship, connection, belonging. why not view it as i do: an appropriation by the state of maybe the most basic property we have?

Terminating kinship, rendering a child “legally dead” to their family—sucks!! exporting children from their entire societies of origin, placing enormous barriers (geographic, linguistic, cultural) to any prospect of reunification—is DEEPLY MORALLY PROBLEMATIC.

did i and do i seek out adoptees who reject the hegemonic “grateful to be saved” narrative? of course i do. i am trying to understand why something the culture tells us is “beautiful” took so much away from me while leaving me unable to voice it or even see it. adoption has enough apologists.

i never “speak for” any other adoptee, because i’m not out here saying “this is what every adopted person experiences,” i’m saying this is what adoption IS. this is how it is structured. this is how it works. this is who it empowers & disempowers. so fuck off with “speak for yourself.” we are.
