End-Of-Year list #3! I have literally heard hundreds of albums this year and I'm happy to say that most of them were great. But here are those that stood out just a little bit more! My 15 favorite albums of 2025!

Love this. Also this reminds me that I’m 90% positive I saw Jack White at the grocery store last month. I didn’t want to be weird about it but I’m sure my staring at him for way too long doing the whole “is that Jack White? I think that might be Jack White” thing in my head was awkward enough 🥴

Saw what I’m fairly certain was Jack White at Kroger a couple months ago; tried to confirm without staring too hard at him; failed on both counts

I think 1 of the biggest hurdles to this is artists rarely (if ever?) can support themselves by being rooted exclusively in a local community. Plumbers, hairstylists, carpenters, mechanics, lawyers, doctors…they can all build a practice locally & earn a living doing their work in town. Any town.

And this is not me saying music fans shouldn’t divest from Spotify. On the contrary. But it is me saying: it’s very hard to grow audience on streaming platforms that have really small user bases and not a big discoverability ecosystem.

I’m personally at the point where i don’t believe in the commodification of art anymore. Perhaps I never did, or at least, never loved the idea of it. But now I 100% think it’s antithetical to what art is and what it’s for.

Making the music as accessible as possible is only one piece of the puzzle. Cutting through the noise to stand out and connect with even one potential new fan is a whole other hurdle, rendered all the more difficult in today’s digital/online landscape.

When the artist gets paid last, they're commodities. As you point out, copyright as currently implemented puts most of the power with the record labels and distribution oligopolies. I don't know how to get there, but the thing I'd recommend is for artists to form cooperatives.
