Today I learned that some buildings on campus post signs noting the name & time of each course taught outside the classroom in which they are taught. I learned this because five or so men gathered around/pointed at said sign during the middle of my Sex & Society class.

My campus was recently peppered with "choose kindness" lawn signs (hug emojis 🤗 included). I'm down for kindness, but it's been very jarring to see them pop up at exactly the same time as the state legislature introducing a bill to dismantle academic freedom at our institution.

If you are of a mind, I would love any recommendations you have for essays about physical pleasure (not just sex).

Responding to social problems with exhortations to kindness is a way we make systemic inequalities look like individual ones, ones that can be changed if we are just nice enough, not ones that require fundamental shifts in how our institutions, organizations and society are arranged.

Someone should really write a book about how we use exhortations to kindness to avoid "political" discussions about racial, gender, sexual and class inequalities...

The CDC’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey has monitored the wellbeing of America’s high school students since 1991. Since 2015, it’s been a vital source of data on LGBQ youth. In 2023, it provided the first ever nationally representative sample of transgender teens. As of this morning, it’s gone.
