loading . . . Human Brains are Now 99.5% Human and 0.5% Plastic Human Brains are Now 99.5% Human and 0.5% Plastic Maybe we do not have to wait for climate change to get us? Perhaps nanoplastics will do that first. As of 2024, from autopsies of many people, the median level of plastic in the human brain was 0.5% by weight. Numbers were higher for dementia suffering patients. This 0.5% by weight is equivalent to 7 grams, or the weight of a plastic spoon or fork. Crazy stuff... As AI advances to be more humanlike, humans degrade to become more plastic-like. Its like we literally are sticking a fork into our brains. How many forks before we die?? From autopsies on people who died in 2024, the plastic level in the brain was 50% higher than that measured in 2016, only 8 years previously. Global plastic production has increased exponentially from 1 to 2 million tons in 1950 to over 400 million tons in 2023, and production is doubling every 10 to 15 years. It takes time for a plastic water bottle floating in the ocean to be broken up into nanoplastics. Clearly, the nanoplastics we find today are likely derived from plastics produced sometime between 1950 and 1990 or so, so breakdown is certainly between 35 and 75 years. So there is a huge lag to this problem, and we will have enormous suffering in the future. Article from the Ethicalist: Our Brains Are Now 99.5% Human—And 0.5% Plastic Human brain samples contain an entire spoon’s worth of nanoplastics, study says by Anthea Ayache, February 11, 2025 https://theethicalist.com/our-brains-are-now-99-5-human-and-0-5-plastic/ Researchers at the University of New Mexico have discovered substantial amounts of microplastics – tiny plastic particles less than 5 millimeters in size—in human brain tissue, with concentrations far exceeding levels found in other organs. The study published in Nature Medicine that analyzed the brains from 52 deceased individuals, discovered that the average sample contained approximately 7 grams of microplastics, equivalent to the weight of a plastic spoon. ‘Compared to autopsy brain samples from 2016, that’s about 50 per cent higher. That would mean that our brains today are 99.5 per cent brain and the rest is plastic.’ Professor Matthew Campen, University of New Mexico ‘I have yet to encounter a single human being who says, “There’s a bunch of plastic in my brain and I’m totally cool with that.”‘ Professor Matthew Campen, University of New Mexico From Meat to Our Brains While microplastics can be ingested, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin, scientists suspect that food, particularly meat, is the primary source of exposure. Irrigating fields with plastic-contaminated water likely leads to the buildup of plastics in crops, which are then consumed by livestock, allowing microplastics to accumulate in animal tissue. 1 liter of bottled water contained an average of 240,000 plastic particles from seven types of plastics. Some 90 per cent of those were nanoplastics meaning the vast majority of plastic contamination in bottled water is at a size invisible to the naked eye.
