That sounds like I'm dismissing the work that goes into those pills, heh. I don't mean that. The process isn't RANDOM; it's the product of decades of effort. It's just...why should pushing THIS chemical button do THAT? And why should that feel a certain way to some people and not others?

Curious to see other people’s input here. It really is existentially infuriating when you realize how much tiny internal tweaks (chemical or otherwise) can completely alter your entire experience of being alive. It just seems…ridiculous!

again, this is literally black-letter constitutional text in virginia. this is an inalienable power that supercedes any formal amendment process. the court went beyond its jurisdiction when it attempted to overturn the referendum.

They tend to come to us trained to provide 'the correct answer' and so, often understandably, they just want to know what that is so they can give it to me. Once I convince them that no, I really want to know what *they* think, and why they think it, it's like dawn breaking, and fun to see.

it’s like one of the most common tics in American life that I have no patience for. “Pay for” is one of the fastest ways to get me to ignore someone. the insistent framing on “individual with money buying things”, it has to be fought. Your taxes are your contribution, your obligation.

They want doms. Ffs doms could solve a lot of this. We need a national dom reserve, like sleeper agents to be tapped into action for the national good.

The US is a maddening state, with much to be condemned, BUT I wish more of us would appreciate the parts of us that actually made us resilient and such a beacon to others-- continuously taking more within our self-definition, an openness to new ways, new bonds forged between different cultures, etc.

A translator once pointed out that a difference between English and Mandarin culture is, when a new speaker speaks English fluently, most others are enthusiastic, but when an outsider speaks Mandarin fluently, many Chinese get suspicious. That’s the biggest limit on China as a global power.

One of the main reasons the US is so goddamn wealthy in the first place is that we made colossal investments in education even when we were far poorer than now. We implemented the Land Grant program in the 1860s, even in the aftermath of a ruinous war that had nearly bankrupted the federal govt.

A fun thing is talking to Boomer relatives about how I (elder millennial) came to be extremely wary of homeownership early on in adult life and put high value on being able to pull up stakes easily rather than count on appreciation years later, and while they're sympathetic it's still alien to them.

US universities genuinely are like “welcome to Tennessee Agricultural College in Bumfuck Nowheresville. We invented the modern potato and our facilities include a particle accelerator, nuclear reactor, and TOP500 supercomputer. Tuition is $12,000 for instate students and we have 40,000 of them”

Japan is one of the most R&D intensive non-US countries, and RIKEN is its most prestigious (non-university) research institute. If you isekai’d it into the US, it only has the fourth biggest R&D budget in the state of North Carolina, which is like the twelfth biggest state

Many people have a vested interest in pretending otherwise, but the US research university is globally dominant to an almost unbelievable degree. The typical state university is a football team stapled to a R&D lab with a budget bigger than the entire nation of Belgium.

Sure, which is why I specified that wrt “practicality it’s operational reality, not morality, that dictates”. Because all sorts of norms etc. surrounding the conduct of war often represent a blend of the three in terms of how and why they were agreed to.

i’d love it if we could somehow prevent adversaries from seeing value in targeting hospitals and water treatment plants and the power grid but i happen to live in the real world where i have to pay taxes that could fund ICE and the San Francisco Giants haven’t won a World Series in over a decade

maybe we should think about how lax regulation allows for dogshit code quality that results in most networks running some kind of external-facing service or device than can be popped if you just stare it for long enough. that might secure CIKR more than saying to adversaries “we’re just a smol bean”
