I think we have to start teaching information from AI as a type of adaptation. The information you get isn’t first hand: it’s all filtered through an algorithm’s lens, and it’s important to interrogate the algorithm and the lens if you want to learn something.

Make no mistake, linking tylenol (paracetamol) to autism is simply an attempt to suggest that neurodivergence is not a 'natural' part of life (which it is), but instead to 'other' the condition and attempt to shift the 'blame' for it onto mothers.

Every time I get a revise & resubmit decision on a paper, I'm glad my advisor taught me her strategy for responding. It doubles as a way to break the revisions down into concrete tasks, which always makes revising feel so much more manageable to me.

I expect that consumer-facing AI programs will continue to improve and they may become much more useful tools for everyday life in the future. But I think it was a disastrous mistake that today’s models were taught to be convincing before they were taught to be right.

I suspect that fact that the vast majority of LLM users don’t seem to have received this (really very simple!) message is because the AI companies have a vested interest in us not understanding it. “ChatGPT is smart, it just makes mistakes sometimes” is much more marketable than the truth.

Keep remembering all the things that the Supreme Court found legal that were later determined to be morally-and often legally- wrong. Start with Plessy vs. Ferguson and legal segregation. The law is not the arbiter of rightness, it often hoards power. Protect trans people at all costs.

This combined with the Supreme Court ruling means the world just got a lot scarier for trans kids and their loved ones. And there are going to be cis adults treating this as a win.

I’ve noticed an uptick in dismissals of the concerns of teachers about AI. Some say that it’s *their* job to find a way to evaluate work that AI can’t replicate. I would just ask that you talk to real teachers and really listen. I’d also suggest reading a bit about writing and the brain.

NSF education grants have been an important part of my growth as an educator, in turn leading to a better education for my students. The fact that that these are being disproportionately targeted for cuts will not only devestate ed research, but mean worse education for K-12 students.

If someone asks for space just give it to them. If someone is wearing a mask, just let them. Neither of those things is endangering you. Not giving immunocompromised people space or bugging them about wearing a mask or telling them they should just stay home...that does endanger them. Sheesh.
