Whenever folks talk about keeping politics out of spaces, my default interpretation of that is that it means I am not welcome. I am inherently political. My race. My sexuality. My gender identity. My socioeconomic history. My vocation. All of it is political. If I tuck those away, what's left of me?

"You can talk about your life, just avoid political topics." As if I choose when life events will include political components of my identity. I can't ensure that me walking through a public space won't become a "political topic." Half of the people I know are "political topics." I am political.

I say this quietly to myself as I try to pretend there's a cosmic reason for why I haven't gotten any writing done.
