Adam decided to make hot cross buns as he didn’t get enough last weekend. I was out for most of it. Bombarded by messages asking to buy sugar, yeast, raisins, allspice berries, all of which were exactly where they were supposed to be. But he got there in the end. Not all cross at my request!

I have just had the experience of my bone conduction headphones being bluejacked. A forced disconnect from my phone and a really creepy voice saying over and over again something like PS CREAM. Bit deaf so not sure. Factory reset seems to have worked….

And the rice pudding was so easy since done in instant pot - as per recipe from @catherinephipps.bsky.social I usually go with some combination of vanilla, bay leaf and lemon zest but this was great

Also please note, I pressure cooked literally every stage of this, separately: mince; leeks; potatoes. Only turned the grill on to toast up the cheese on the leeks. YAY for @catherinephipps.bsky.social + her amazingly thorough book Modern Pressure Cooking 🧡

Today I am mourning the loss of a rare and glorious day of the house entirely to myself for 6 whole hours. Instead I have swapped office bound husband for sofa bound sick son. Of course I am sorry he is ill but peace shattered. Plus 5 day break to Cornwall scuppered.

Gloomy day today but the birdsong almost makes up for it. Merlin recorded (I can ID a lot birds but not all of these!) - blackbird, song thrush, dunnock, robin, goldfinch, greenfinch, wren, long tailed, blue and great tits, greater spotted woodpecker, as well as all the bigger & water birds.

Can second this. I’ve been buying from them for years and they are excellent quality. As well as online, Londoners can find them at the Chiswick Flower Market, first Sunday of the month.

Annual bonding exercise going on downstairs with Adam and Shariq cackling over how bad their wrapping is. I’m a “try hard” apparently.

Anyway for dinner for the approximately one millionth time I made @catherinephipps.bsky.social caramelised endives with soy, grapefruit + thyme, but bc it has been 1M times I no longer follow the recipe, so Seville marmalade instead of grapefruit, + a dot of Scotch Bonnet sauce afterwards

Trying to instil routine. Lilly is back with us so getting her and Adam to decide what they want to cook for dinner so any ingredients can be bought by Shariq in the day. And if this fails, then something out the freezer. There will be arguments. L always wants vegetarian, A always wants meat.

Shariq & Adam are putting the Christmas tree up and it is so big there’s barely space for anything else in the sitting room. Perfect shape and it’s going to have to be trimmed down a bit. I am letting go of even more control freakery and leaving them to it. Just too tired to be directing operations.

Adam is tidying up my bedside table again. He is a messy boy but for the third time today he has cleared away empty mugs, medication blister packs, a banana skin. I know he wants to feel he is doing something useful, I find it so endearing.

Shariq was absolutely dreading going up into the loft to play pot luck with the numerous boxes of Christmas decorations, especially as we have so many lights. But I have just got a “Bless you, Mary Poppins,” as I had labelled everything in detail. Including “Use these lights, 2023➡️.”

I am home from hospital and lying on the sofa watching Ted Lasso (yet again) with Adam and he has just started flicking through Everyday Pressure Cooking “to find something to cook for you tomorrow.”

The shittiest of shitty weeks involving bullying and vile boys who if not checked will end up like all the horrible toxic men we see getting away with nonsense throughout their entitled lives. So we are rewatching as antidote Ted Lasso & seeing my son proper laugh for the first time in days.

Today I have had an afternoon batch cooking. Since 2pm I have cooked ribs, a pork casserole, a mutton saag, a ham, a split pea soup, a tomato sauce and a chicken broth. And about to start a bolognese. Pressure cookers are great.

This year we made @nigelslater.bsky.social Christmas pud recipe from Christmas Chronicles. To make it extra special we used our copper pudding pot, created in collaboration with @regulaysewijn.bsky.social. @catherinephipps.bsky.social will be pleased to hear it was steamed in our pressure cooker.
