Melange, a fancy word for mixture. A clever word to make a “what’s left before shopping day” dinner sound posher. Pasta, half a large aubergine, a green pepper, prawns & a jar of artichokes; all tossed somewhat unceremoniously together. Not pretty, but delicious; good taste trumps good looks!

Treacle tart: a favourite of Dr Dolittle; regularly tucked into Famous Five’s picnic baskets by Enid Blyton; sleepily referenced by the dormouse in Alice in Wonderland; used as bait by the frankly terrifying Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the school dinner pudding that everyone loved.

A recipe from Claire Thomson, aka 5oclock apron, for a 6 o’clock dinner Schnitzel re-imagined with celeriac “steaks” topped with caper, tomato & butter sauce. With Bold Bean Co chickpeas for protein, warmed through with a wheelbarrow load of spinach, which wilted to a couple of trowelfuls.

A scrap of left-over puff pastry, a single egg white. A lifetime’s conditioning of waste not, want not. Line a 6” prospector pan, spread the base with the last scrapings of a jar of jam. Mix the egg white with some ground almonds and sugar (pantry staples here) and spread this paste over the jam.

Creating a feast for a fiver is quite a feat. But Patricia Chung mama to the Rangoon Sisters did just that for Jamie Oliver’s Feast for a Fiver programme on Channel 4. Her sardine mohinga looked fabulous & we were excited to spot her use a Netherton Foundry glamping pot for her crispy chana dal.
