Time is rarely more liminal than during the week between Christmas and New Year’s. It can be disorienting.

Tomorrow’s Boxing Day, my favorite part of Canadian Christmas, with its implicit permission to do next to nothing. Unless you feel like bargain-hunting when the shops are never more crowded.

I find it moving that David Lynch loved IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE so much he couldn't talk about it without crying. His sincere belief in the redemptive possibilities contained in that film and what it said about people seems to me like a key element of understanding his own work.

In THE HOLDOVERS, Angus claims his skimpy bathing suit is “the same swimsuit James Bond wears in ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE.” But Bond doesn’t wear a swimsuit in that movie.

One of the surrealist experiences I've had in recent memory was hearing the theme song from "You Only Live Twice" (instrumental) at my local Toys R Us yesterday.

I wrote about SALO for my reader's choice series. I hadn't seen the film since I was a teenager, and rewatching it was a necessary, difficult experience. It's something we should all probably do every ten or fifteen years. It's not the easiest movie to write about!

There is SOME precedent of musicians appearing in Bond films - A VIEW TO A KILL’s Max Zorin was written for David Bowie, who declined. Grace Jones and Madonna would be the two noteworthy singers to appear in the franchise, but as the main villain it’s a wild swing.

Lenny Kravitz playing a Bond villain in the upcoming video game feels like exactly the kind of bonkers creative decision that they were too afraid to make over the past couple of decades. I say bring it.

DARKER THAN AMBER (1970) Travis McGee novels should be musty and used, and I associate them with summer cottage reading I liked this Rod Taylor version. You can feel the Florida sunshine, also the grime and sweat Tubi transfer helps. Taped off TV with a VCR. Tracking visible
