Most underrated gangster film, STATE of GRACE, w Sean Penn, Gary Oldman, & Ed Harris. I think it flew under the radar bc it came out the same year as GOODFELLAS, I get that, but STATE OF GRACE is phenomenal. Gary Oldma, his role as Jackie Flannery, is definitely one of his best. free on MGM

I'm Rewatching this one for the first time in a decade or more. Man, I almost forgot how much of a masterpiece it is. IMO, Lee's best, and Norton's best work as an actor. Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Rosario Dawson, and Barry Pepper are all stellar in it, too.

Book rec: Since I talked abt Manchette in my last post, thought I'd rec a book. Out of FATALE; THE MAD & THE BAD; THE PRONE GUNMAN, my fav is THE MAD & THE BAD. There are 3 or so I haven't read but plan to. if a fan or noir & haven't read him, you must. The intro by James Sallis, stellar!

One of my favorite discoveries in the past two years has been the work of Jean-Patrick Manchette. I've read FATALE; THE MAD & THE BAD; THE PRONE GUNMAN. I love all of them for different reasons. I look forward to reading more. His books are the best.

Steve Weddle interviewing Pete Farris. I really enjoyed Pete's book that I own. I believe it's his only book in English. I wish I could read French, but I can't Solid interview here. Pete doesn't hold back at the end with his views on the American publishing industry & American literacy. I smiled.

Been reading for decades. Publishing stories, poems, essays, columns, for years. It's fucking refreshing to read collections like this one from @jdclappwrites.bsky.social Excellent work. You can run w labels all you want, grit, etc. This book has heart, & that's what impressed me the most.

As much as I like Shane Black's crime films, & I do enjoy the first 3 Parker books, the new one w Mark Wahlberg looks CRAPTASTIC. Walking away from explosions in slo mo, backwards jumps off cliffs, rapid fire kung fu punches. Lee Marvin is the greatest adaptation of Parker. I'll die on that hill.

Watched SHE RIDES SHOTGUN based on the @jordanharper.bsky.social novel I enjoyed it. Movies don't always get the entire novel in, but it's a solid film w huge heart. Great performances by Ana Heger & Egerton No idea who Rob Yang is, but I'm a fan now. The emotional honesty in his face, solid.
