My article on voter support for disabled candidates is now published at doi.org/10.1086/732994. I find that left-wing voters in UK+US favour disabled candidates, while right-wing voters prefer non-disabled candidates - but only because voters assume disabled candidates to be more left-wing. [1/2]

Might I politely say that this would be a good moment for anyone who runs a big social or election study to give some serious thought to including a battery of Qs on attitudes to feminism/gender roles? We have some great questions on sexism/household gender roles but need more imho (unsurprisingly!)

The most striking result from yesterday’s German election #btw2025 🇩🇪: 🔹 35 years after reunification: The GDR is redrawn on this map. 🔹 The AfD won 45 out of 48 electoral districts in the East. 🔹 In some parts of Saxony, they came close to 50%! Why is this happening? Here’s my take 👇

There could certainly be a potential role for online hate and misogyny but I don’t think (or find in the analysis we can do) we can attribute the gender gap to just this. First: young women voting left rather than centre left needs explaining. Second: modern gender gap is much older than tiktok…

👀 one of the key differences we’re starting to see in the gender gap in younger age groups is that it’s not driven by differences in vote for centre left/right parties - most recent UK election similar. Lots to investigate…

AfD overwhelmingly won votes from non-voters and the centre-right. This is a standard pattern. It is a myth that the radical right are mainly winning disaffected centre-left voters.
