AOC already has a decent shot at unseating Schumer, but imagine how the politics of the 2025 NYC mayoral race could play into that – if Zohran becomes one of the most well-known anti-Trump figures and then his top ally challenges the aging Dem leader who refused to endorse him.

Schumer is absolutely risking his career here. He's extremely vulnerable to a progressive primary challenge in 2028 because he's seen as being unwilling to confront Trump, and refusing to support the future NYC mayor who is being attacked by Trump plays right into that narrative.

A lot has been written about the supposed backlash that Jeffries and Schumer would face if they endorsed Mamdani. But it seems clear that their refusal to endorse is much more likely to lead to backlash. Just automatically endorsing the Democratic candidate is actually easy to defend.
