I think one of the other things about the call for "hopeful fiction" - and the question of whether hopeful fiction is what we need now - is that it's paradoxically not specific enough. Like, what kind of hope? What kind of future is hopeful? What does the author imagine about how we can get there?

I have decided that "polarization" is a useless word. If people sharply disagree about something, why? "Because some mechanism rewards/encourages sharp disagreements" could be part of the answer, but is rarely the whole one, and can obscure what is actually at stake in the disagreement.

Write what you want. Embrace who you are. Forget everything else. Get lost in the art.

The purpose of dystopic fiction is not to accurately predict the entirety of the future. It is to gather attention to alarming elements of the present. A book is not a magic spell that prevents evil from rising. We have to do the work.

People take “write what you know” too literally, and that’s why they hate it. Take what is core to your person—your deepest beliefs, emotions, and experiences—and filter those things through the prism of fiction. Somewhat relatedly, I'm also getting impatient with any description of autism + mental health that doesn't mention trauma or dissociation. Dissociation is not universal for autistic people but it is way, way more common than most people realize. And trauma *is* almost universal for us.

It's interesting reading about the typical ways autistic women mask - obsessively studying other people, copying them, trying very hard to do the "correct" thing at the expense of one's own feelings - and realizing I've never really done that very much? I do a bunch of other things.
