I knew you’d ask! From DH method u posted it seems the source of variation (needed to generate CIs) comes from variation in services trusts’ provide. Bootstrapping (10k repeated sampling of data) can generate a mean etc from which CIs can be calculated. Please can a proper statistcian explain!

It’s supposed- in part- to help patients decide on their care. I’ve just run excerpts through a reading age scanner. It excludes half the adult population on that criterion alone.

Indeed! Said in another post that it’s a performative act to publish performance tables. Ie important signal to public that politicians taking performance seriously but in themselves useless. It’s other, boring and long term things the NHS does that improve performance.
