Most people know about N95s from covid, but i (and many others) wore them long before that for things like woodworking — they are designed to keep out small particles, thus are very effective on forest fire smoke (as well as germs/viruses)

They really are effective. I went out with one yesterday and couldn’t smell or taste smoke, but when I got back into my driveway it was raining and I had to leave the mask off — gotta say i highly recommend an N95 when it’s like this.
