Got a phone call late afternoon on Tuesday during my visit to our Wallops Island, VA, ozonesonde site that NWS was immediately halting the 2x daily soundings there (WAL). Indeed they have disappeared from the map starting 1 October:

Iâm not exactly comforted by the fact that every storm that has formed in this otherwise âquietâ season has gone absolutely bonkers. Weâre on borrowed time.

I guess my biggest concern would be if some Fujiwhara tomfoolery slows the storm and greatly prolongs heavy rain and surge along the coast next week

Massive day for Philly Haters today. Eagles already took care of business against the Cowboys, Chiefs faltered, nothing on the line but hate.

With just 0.20" of rain at DCA this month, it seems probable that this will be the driest month of August since Washington DC area records began in 1871. 2nd place right now is 1962 with 0.55" of rain

Erin joined a long list of recent Category 5s. Are they happening more often?
When it exploded to 160-mph sustained winds on August 16, Erin became the 11th Category 5 storm in the basin since 2016.

Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility and NASA Wallops successfully launched from Fort Sumner, NM, with our prototype optical ozonesonde instrument this morning! It will float at about 35-37 km altitude for 3-4 hours and land somewhere in AZ. Track it here:

***third lowest for 1980-2024. These are all best track points for 1980-2024 Atlantic storms at Cat 2 vmax and "HU" designation (i.e. not post-tropical).

11am: 95kt, 941hpa. NHC actually used the outer wind max and a larger surface reduction factor. Third lowest for 95kts, 2.77 standard deviations below the mean (962.3). Might make the plot nicer tomorrow after work. Btw I have no idea what that 998hpa 85kt storm is. I'm pretty sure my code is ok..

Pretty impressive deepening of Erin of about 7mb in 90 minutes. Suggests central pressure of ~941mb, although because of the stormâs size the core winds may not respond much, or quickly
