Hurricane Melissa produced the fastest hurricane winds to be recorded by a dropsonde, verified by reviewing data at NSF NCAR! Hurricane Melissa’s 252 mph wind gust surpassed the previous record from Typhoon Megi over the Western Pacific in 2010, where a dropsonde measured wind gusts of 248 mph.

The last hurricane hunter flights into Melissa have departed before its landfall in Jamaica. As always kudos to them for their work powering through especially powerful storms like this to collect invaluable data.

Believe that's correct. Sim Aberson of HRD indicated the other day that the current record is 215 kt in Typhoon Megi. Sounding would need to be reviewed, obviously.

FL winds in the southern eyewall, generally not the strongest portion of a storm, up to 173 kts/199 mph, certainly supporting the current ~180 mph intensity. Melissa is undoubtedly peaking as it slams into Jamaica
