3/9/1999. The ETA's and AVN's depictions of a snowstorm were both discounted even as snow began. Seemed like the swv trof would shear out w scant overrunning. The forecast? -S and a ~1". But 6 hours later? CSI banding and 8-12"

Light pollution is another big issue people are making for themselves

The snow map, especially one with rigid contours, isn't always the best way to convey impact and potential amid high uncertainty. But the I-Want-Quick-Answers low attention span society expects a snow map though.

Weather community: We should get away from using deterministic forecasts. Also weather community: 2-32” possible. I think we need to figure out why some of the most accessible maps to the public also have some of the most ridiculous output. Not blaming any one org. But that’s problematic.

I wrote an essay a few years ago about the downside of snow maps. The maps can degrade an otherwise good written forecast that better accounts for the uncertainty and impact. Attention spans are microscopically short now, and many seek out the map for a simple answer that doesn't actually exist.
