RIP Marcia Lucas, whose skill as a film editor and storyteller made a clunky independent film called STAR WARS greater than the sum of its parts. Rightly referred to as "Lucas's secret weapon," Marcia had an uncanny talent to see a film from the perspective of an audience--and won an Oscar for it.

This is 100% true but it's still a risk most studios outside of the US can't take. Tons of amazing culturally specific studios have to first find their audience, prove their ability, and do that with games palatable for an audience that generally knows very little culture outside US culture.

After watching Noclip's excellent documentary on the making of, I'm under the impression that Disco was lightning in a bottle that capital has attempted to steal with the hopes of repeating it. It's similar to the whole Subnautica 2/Krafton debacle, but seems to have less ChatGPT as legal counsel.
