finally read Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun (thanks @arkmashton.bsky.social) and it is incredible. honestly almost glad I waited until now to read it because there is a lot to take in I've read about as much fiction this year as I did in total from 2020-24. my kids are big and my brain is back

If you’re looking to get into Gene Wolfe, may I suggest starting with this. A brilliant collection of short stories (a couple are novella length) each picked out by Wolfe himself. Start with the first and read them all. His range is amazing. 5 stars. #books #booksky #amreading #writingcommunity

I was sick this week so I had plenty of time to read. Finished Book of the Long Sun and got to that masterpiece now :) It doesn't exist in french so I was a little worried but it's actually kinda easy to read. I wonder if I could have read BotNS in english xD Can't put it down. #book #genewolf

I was totally captivated and mind-blown by it when it first came out. I'm long overdue for a reread. It was one of a number of works that seemed to owe a lot to Mervyn Peake that came out around the same time.

question: how much does it bother you in a book if you don’t quite understand what’s going on? what measures do you take to remedy this lack of understanding? what novels most rewarded your further investigation?

If I find the prose enthralling and exciting to read, I can keep reading even when everything seems a mystery. Also, if the characters have somehow hooked me. I've read Foucault's Pendulum multiple times and keep finding new things in it. Same for Shadow of the Torturer.
