I had a fantastic time botanizing with @seedystudies.bsky.social in Talladega County this week! Prunus alabamensis, an S1 species was found and vouchered, and seeds were collected from Manfreda virginica and Goodyera pubescens.

On one hand, I am actively feeling dreadful, hopeless, frustrated, and angry (gestures at the world). On the other, more privileged side, I get to professionally play outside and collect data that (hopefully) contributes to broader conservation goals. Two things can be true at the same time…🥲🫠

All of the birders who have traveled to and enjoyed Colombia. among other places, over the last decade or so should know that USAID is the entity that helped fund much of the ecotourism and conservation infrastructure that we get to enjoy there. The birding trails. The lodges. The land. All of it.

Surveying for springs in the Cahaba water table. We use a thermal camera and YSI meter to collect water quality data like the water temp, dissolved oxygen, and pH.

Jan 17th: “Day in the office” We collect a ton of data from streams and rivers across Alabama. To do so, we have to get creative with how to store our sensors securely- sometimes we have to repair our “ingenious” rigging. PS. My waders had a hole in them and I had very cold and very soggy socks 🙃
