Hawaiian crows are extinct in the wild and are found nowhere else on Earth. Now, a small group, safeguarded in captivity, has been released in the forests of Maui.

We suspect the best time to collect pollen for ex situ #conservation is shortly after anthesis. But when do flowers open? Ochrosia kauaiensis (Hōlei; #Apocynaceae) is Critically Endangered on the #IUCN Red List. We used the ntbgarden.bsky.social Living Collection to capture this time-lapse video.

The incidence of fire in Hawaii is increasing and although we collectively curate nearly 100 million seeds, we still fell short of seed that would be compatible with post-fire restoration after the devastating 2023 Lahaina Fire, highlighting the need for more seed to achieve management objectives.
