I spoke with researchers about how and why this phenomenon evolved and what threats it poses to the survival of the species in Italy and beyond.

Italy, home to one of Europe’s largest wolf populations, is among the countries most affected by this phenomenon. Recent analyses have shown that in the country’s central and southern regions, nearly half of wild wolves are actually wolf-dog hybrids.

Wolf populations around Europe have seen a significant growth over the past 50 years, but they still face multiple threats. An underestimated, silent one is hybridization with free-ranging dogs.
