More penstemons! Another early bloomer here is the Lowly Penstemon. Small but mighty, it is happy in blazing sun or part shade, low to high elevations. A newer addition to my garden is Cascade Penstemon. It’s found at higher elevations on the east side, and the hummingbirds love it. 🌱

One more penstemon for the day. I was introduced to Palmers penstemon in AZ, when I was stopped cold by an amazing 5’ tall stand on a rocky hillside. They’re a favorite of bumblebees and have an amazing scent. They’re happiest in full sun, dry soil. 🌱

Penstemons! My longtime favorite group of wildflowers. Currently growing 11 different native species. First to bloom here, early May, is Shrubby Penstemon - P. fruticosus. Supports insects and hummingbirds, blooms last about a month. No supplemental water. 🌱

What an appealing little growth habit! I love Penstemon so much lol id love a garden full, native and not-technically-native alike😅

While researching for this week’s post, I stumbled on an iNaturalist observation of a caterpillar using a blue flag iris that’s not included in any of the big datasets. This is very exciting and I don’t understand why various members of my household doesn’t want me to talk about this constantly

So fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn about hand pollinating the endangered Eastern Prairie Fringed Orchid today. It is primarily pollinated by Hawkmoths, who get pollen on their heads while drinking the nectar from deep in the nectar spur. #nativeplants #pollinators #nachusagrasslands

Thanks to the reminder from @sarahmackattack.bsky.social, I scurried out to the garden just in time to collect seeds from my Western Red Columbine plant. Hopefully I’ll have some luck with seed starting and next year have even more native plants to feed the hummingbirds and insects!
