Did you know that the bees that need saving are NOT honeybees? Honeybees are the dairy cows of bees. People brought them over from Europe to make us honey. The problem with honeybees, esp in resource-limited ecosystems (like hey! cities!) is that they compete with our native bees for food.

"Forest Attendant" Black-Capped Chickadee 5"x7" Oil on panel Chickadees are wonderful in so many ways. They're often the first birds to investigate a new situation, and other birds watch & follow them to find food sources. The friendly local 'dees often bring other birds to my yard, to my delight.

"Flow" Great Crested Flycatcher, 10"x8" oil on panel, 2023. 🪶 We love watching the flycatchers hunt in the yard. In my house we call this a "great crested fweep" because it says "FWEEP"

In winter, I have bird feeders up, but the last 10-ish years I've been planting more native plants out in my yard each year. Witnessing the interactions between these plants and wildlife has been so joyful, and full of constant learning. This winter, tree sparrows taught me something new 🪶 (thread):

"Power Stance" Carolina Wren, 5"x7" oil on panel, 2023. The range of these wrens has extended northward in the last few decades, so I get to enjoy them locally now, and I love everything about them. Very beautiful, very powerful.🪶

"Ironweed" Nashville Warbler, 10"x8" oil on panel, 2023. Last fall, several warbler species came to my native plant gardens every day and gleaned hundreds of tiny invertebrates per hour out of the plants, it was magical. 🪶 I love the waxy burgundy-red and white of the spent ironweed flowers.
