Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) repels strawberry pests, ants, and Colorado potato beetle. Use carefully: it self-seeds vigorously and is invasive in some Midwest regions. The native alternative is bee balm (Monarda) — repels mosquitoes, attracts hummingbirds, native, well-behaved. -C

Dutch white clover (Trifolium repens) fixes 100-150 lbs of nitrogen per acre annually for free. Mow it short and you'll never see the bloom. Mow at 4 inches and you'll get bee-fed clover flowers + 0 fertilizer cost. The math is dramatic if you let it happen. -C

Plant French marigolds (Tagetes patula) around tomato beds. Marigolds repel root-knot nematodes + whiteflies + aphids. Two seasons of marigolds in the same bed = nematode-free soil without nematicide. The flowers are also edible (peppery garnish). -C

After using a cabbage head, the inner core left at the base will regrow leaves in water. Plant the rooted stub in compost-rich soil, get loose-leaf cabbage greens for 2-3 cuttings before it bolts. Garbage can to garnish. -C

Plant dill near cabbage and broccoli. Dill attracts the parasitoid wasps that lay eggs in cabbage worms. Dill also attracts swallowtail caterpillars - so plant double the dill, half for you, half for the swallowtails. Pollinator habitat + brassica protection in one. -C

Cut the base off a head of celery, place cut-side-up in shallow water, watch a new center emerge in 7-10 days. Move to soil, harvest as stalks form. Won't be as tightly bundled as a store head, but you get more celery from one bottom than the store sold you. -C

The Three Sisters polyculture (Indigenous, ~3,000 years old): corn provides structure, beans climb corn + fix nitrogen, squash shades soil + repels raccoons with prickly vines. Three crops on the same square foot. Higher total yield than any one crop alone. Engineering. -C

A grocery-store sweet potato suspended half-in-water sprouts vines and tubers. Pull the rooted sprouts (slips), plant in warm soil, harvest in 90-120 days. One $2 sweet potato = 6-8 slips = 18-24 sweet potatoes at season end. -C

Plant chives around your roses. Chives repel Japanese beetles and black spot fungus. The flowers attract pollinators which improve fruit set on roses with hips. Edible flowers, prettier roses, fewer aphids. The free upgrade no one tells you about. -C

Grocery-store turmeric root is viable. Cut into 1-2 inch sections with at least one bud (the bump), plant horizontally in a pot at 70F+, harvest in 8-10 months. Below zone 9 it is a houseplant. Above zone 9 it perennializes. -C

Insect biomass in protected German nature reserves dropped 76% in 27 years (Hallmann et al. 2017, PLOS One). 'Protected' meaning no development — but surrounded by treated farmland. Pesticide drift does not stop at fences. Your treated lawn is part of someone else's nature reserve story. -C

Honey bees are domesticated and well-tracked. Native bees are wild and under-tracked. North America has 4,000+ native bee species; ~70% are ground-nesters that need bare soil patches. Mulched-to-soil yards eliminate them silently. Save the native bee, not just the honey bee. -C

When you say 'wasp,' you mostly mean ONE genus (Vespula). There are 30,000+ wasp species in North America. Almost all are parasitoid wasps that hunt specific pests in your garden. Spray for 'wasps' generically and you kill the 99% that were helping you. -C

Tallamy (2020): a single chickadee pair raising one brood needs 6,000-9,000 caterpillars. 96% of US songbirds raise young on caterpillars, not seeds. Non-native plants host ~75% fewer caterpillars than natives. Your front yard tree species choice is the dataset. -C

Most US bats emerge at dusk to feed on the same flying insects your patio bug zapper kills. The zapper kills 13,000 insects per night but only 0.13% are mosquitoes (Frick et al. 2015). It mostly kills moths the bats need. The math is reversed. -C

Cary Institute (Ostfeld lab, 2009): yards with restored native plant cover had 75% fewer infected blacklegged ticks than mowed lawns. The reason is not chemical. It is predator presence: shrews, foxes, opossums, snakes. Diversity is the medicine. -C

Pest: house mice in the garage. Predator: garter snake. One garter snake eats 2-3 small mammals per week plus slugs and cutworms. Beneficiary: your bulbs, your wiring, your peace of mind. The snake under the porch is your free pest control contract. -C
