The "compact" is a threat, with the administration explicitly stating that it plans to disfavor universities that don't sign in areas from foreign student visas, student loans, federal contracts as well as grants, and even tax [501(c)(3)] status. It's a maximalist plan of 1st Amendment violation.

I’m reading abstracts for ABRCMS and seeing over and over again where students comment about what a transformative experience ABRCMS was for their peers and mentors. We cannot let this conference disappear because what we will lose will be tremendous. Funders, I hope you are listening.

I can understand why NSF is limiting GRFP apps to undergrads and 1st year grad students . What I can't why they didn't wait one cycle to implement after making the announcement. But I do trust that the program officers are doing their best to keep science afloat under extraordinary conditions.

Coincidentally, another group published results today on a very similar question: What research wouldn't have gotten done had the NIH's budget been cut by 40%, as Trump proposed? Under that scenario, NIH-funded research on more than half of 557 drugs approved 2000-2023 would have never happened!

Why is this horrible for Universities? Just about everyone who isn't a citizen or green card holder already who's hired for a tenure track faculty position is hired through an H1B and then, after 3-5 years, applies for a green card. This is literally "No more foreign professors can be hired"

Those on an H1B cannot return to the US from tomorrow (Sunday) unless paying $100K. This is an out-of-the blue presidential action. We’ll see software engineers stranded abroad. One easy to predict outcome: those on US visas will travel less… for work, for conferences etc.

Immigrants, particularly on H1Bs, are the lifeblood of American innovation. If you wanted to hurt US competitiveness in the next century, I can think of few more effective ways than a move like this Even when found illegal, the mere intent will have irreparably harmed our future

I am deeply saddened and angered by news that more NIH RIFs may happen next week. This is unacceptable, especially after NIH staff have worked nights & weekends to dig out from the backlog created by this admin's incompetence. Tell your Congress people NIH needs its staff to keep delivering cures

A substantial part (but not all) of this increased investment is multi-year funded grants. My current estimate is that multi-year funding has been used in lieu of ~2400 annually funded grants that could have been made. 2/2
