A basic thing that’s helpful for me: Catholic belonging is primarily sacramental-juridical. It’s got a doctrinal and moral quality, obviously, but those are derived from a much more fundamental sacramental existence. This “allows” contradictions like sin and error within the context of their remedy.

Joe Biden regularly and publicly attended Mass. He visibly embraced Catholic religiosity more than JFK ever did. As VP too. My parents are like this: they just can’t conceive of Biden, whose favorite hymn is my grandma’s favorite hymn, as also a Catholic. It all goes in a memory black hole.

Remember how Trump said ICE targets “violent criminals?” Trump’s own DOJ now reports that ONLY 2.5% of the people ICE arrested in Chicago have any criminal history. That means 97.5% have ZERO criminal record. They were targeted because they were of Latino ethnicity. This is what fascism looks like
