I've got a story to tell about the Fredericton Exhibition, the Odell family, and the reason the Exhibition exists on Smythe Street. The land wasn't donated 200 years ago. The racetrack was never donated. A subdivision was never built in the 1920s. I'll have time to write it up at some point.

In 1929, it was reported that CNR was considering building a large railway hotel and golf resort in what would become Odell Park.

Uncomplimentary remarks were made at the AGM of Agricultural Society No. 34 in November 1918.

In 1921, the Agricultural Society, who owned Fredericton Exhibition Ltd, began to discuss acquiring the Fredericton Park Association, who operated the race track. The Park Association leased the land from the Odell family up to that point.

As of 1934, children up to Grade 8 were admitted free to the Exhibition, and prior to that year had received a half-day off school to attend the show.

The City and Exhibition were fighting about land more than a hundred years ago.

Fredericton used to have three ferries from downtown. The Devon ferry left from the bottom of Regent Street, landed near Picaroons. The St Mary's ferry left from the bottom of York Street. The Nashwaaksis ferry left from the bottom of Smythe Street, landed behind Superstore.

I get many of these old maps of Fredericton from the 1878 York County atlas. The city has changed a lot over 150 years, but most of the main roads were there.

The Exhibition Grounds haven't always been on Smythe Street. In the late-1800s, they were located on York Street, near where the old Hartt shoe factory is today.

Suggested names for the new Fredericton Middle School Saunders Street Middle School Odell Middle School Exhibition Middle School Wilmot Park Middle School I'd suggest Sunshine Gardens Middle School, but we've already got Sunset Acres Elementary.
