I have sympathy for this, but I don't actually think intricate interiority generally makes for very good fiction, partly because it isn't at all realistic. You can indulge in it from time to time but folks who treat it as the main goal of fiction are, IMO, thoroughly lost in the sauce.

To make this part a little clearer: the thing I found in the movie that solves this problem isn't a character I can lift or anything like that. I realized that my protagonist could struggle in a different way from what I had imagined, because of the way the movie is about struggling as time passes.

There's really interesting social science on how white people significantly overestimate the number of people of color in a room or in a picture. A room with, like, 20% POC will be perceived as majority POC.
