Again there's simply no comparison between the scope, scale, & tone of the JOE BIDEN EPICALLY AND INCOMPETENTLY FAILED IN AFGHANISTAN coverage of August/September 2021 & the "just the facts, very measured" reporting of what's going on with Iran & Trump now.

This is a rehash of the vibecession debates but median household income adjusted for inflation hit a record in 2024 (2025 data will be released in September). It’s just *not true* in any objective sense that people don’t have money anymore. It may *feel* that way but that’s different from reality.

And Trump has a way of using brute repetition to get the media to forget his fuck-ups and scandals. So by hyper-focusing on the Strait, Trump can pretend that was the goal all along. And if it opens, the media appears poised to treat it like a victory, when it's us surrendering.

Oh dear, folks, I was being sarcastic, not literal. No one has explicitly stated that the goal of the war was to open the strait. The glowing "peace talks" and "historic event" coverage is concealing the ugly reality: Trump lost this war. And begging Iran to open the strait is no victory.

As I feared, it's hardening into common media wisdom that Trump started the war to open the Strait of Hormuz, and therefore it's an outstanding victory that he achieved this once-unthinkable accomplishment.

And this isn't forward-looking at all! The people Biden pardoned would absolutely be persecuted right now if he hadn't pardoned them, but no one did anything on the expectation of a pardon, especially an explicit one. Trump is explicitly promising pardons to induce his people to act criminally!

Biden’s preemptive pardons were to protect people from a promised perversion of justice. Trump’s promised preemptive pardons are to shield people from the actual administration of justice. If you compare the two you’re running interference for the latter.

You still occasionally see people complain about Democratic politicians getting successfully nailed for sexual misconduct, while Republican politicians like Trump are seemingly able to shake it off. The difference, I think, is that Democratic voters now generally don't tolerate this sort of thing

I would point out that popular protests tend to be flaky & only loosely responsive to actual events. But it's a serious problem that a lot of left protest dynamics are at best "how do we influence Democrats & the Democratic Party with the biggest stick we can find" with little conceptual follow-up.
