It's been a bit since I've done a meteorological deep dive, but the devastating flash #flood in central Texas this July 4th/5th deserve a closer look. #TXwx Yes remnants of #Barry were involved helping enhance moisture. A remnant MCV from Mexico on 3 July also played a role. Full evolution below ⤵️

An aspect of the catastrophic flash flooding events that I haven’t yet seen discussed: over land, mesoscale convective vortices have a diurnal cycle that favors rain near their center at night. And, as @rschumacher.cloud and others have shown, mesoscale rotation can increase rainfall totals. (1/2)

After 42 days and 15,000 + miles driven, #ICECHIP completed 24 IOPs across 11 states, including within 75 miles from both the Mexico and Canada borders. This totaled more than 10,000 hailstones collected by our teams while data was gathered on different types of hailstorms!

was not expecting to wake up and see reports of an early-morning swath of large hail along the Front Range (apologies to those who woke up to damage.) Big hail in the early am is *exceedingly* rare. Prior to today, only 7 reports in state records of 2"+ hail between the hours of 2-5am. #cowx

Simply incredible satellite imagery of a dust storm hitting Chicago this evening.

The microphysics scheme referenced here has been mainly developed by my long-time collaborator @tedmwx.bsky.social of NSSL and we will be working together to use the disdrometer observations collected during the field phase as “ground truth” to validate these improvements. Looking forward to it!
