Has got to be one of the most miserable obs I’ve seen in the CONUS. 101/83 in McAllen, TX yielding a heat index of 129°F 🥵🥵

Quite the bounded weak echo region with the tornado-producing storm near Grandview, IL just west of Terre Haute as seen from the Lincoln and Indianapolis 88Ds. Good indication of a strong updraft suspending hydrometeors aloft.

Gravity wave-induced clouds somewhere over Nebraska! Neat seeing the consistent wavelength.

Mid-Altitude Radial Convergence (MARC) signature on this storm east of Gurley, NE. Probably producing some very gusty winds at the surface.

Spent the past couple of days in Boston for the AMS Publications Committee Meeting as the early-career committee member at large. Was great to meet and interact with some wonderful people. Also neat seeing AMS HQ for the first time! Boston is awesome - wish I could have stayed here longer.

At least now this seems to be producing a lot of small, water-coated hail given the Kdp as high as 5 deg/km?

Flying out of DIA the the afternoon of June 1 and on my way passing a car with “needanewwindshield.com” is awfully fitting. It should be a rule of thumb to get covered parking anything from May-July here. 🙃

A loop of a LEWP (plus some bistatic coupling)

Good example of a lowering of the melting layer height. Ring of reduced correlation coefficient (indicating melting/mixed-phase hydrometeors) shrinking with time. Bright band is getting closer to the surface/closer range from the radar with time. Lots of wet bulbing going on after the onset of rain!

Reminder to double check if your strong inbounds/outbounds are collocated with higher values of reflectivity and correlation coefficient! Side lobe contamination can be especially prominent in the inflow region of storms…

This is an absolutely wild observation for mid-May.

00Z Salt Lake City sounding showing a true dry microburst sounding, including a cloud layer ~500 mb combined with ~350 J/Kg SBCAPE rooted from 600-350 mb and a very dry sub-cloud layer featuring a 47°F sfc dewpoint depression. An inverted-V profile! Not to mention 1300 J/Kg of downdraft CAPE.

Now that’s what I call rapid onset of El Niño! Strong anomalous westerlies across the equator are rapidly moving warmer water from the West Pacific causing rapid warming of the East Pacific over the past month. Niño 3.4 SSTA values are already exceeding the +0.5°C threshold and are still climbing.

Higher confidence that the phasing between the longwave trough to our north and the closed low to our south will favor such MUCH needed precipitation early this week, with a good shot of colder air as well. Below are probabilities of seeing > 0.5" QPF as well as the 50th %ile QPF thru 12 AM Weds.

All the cumulus on radar! A nice reminder that spring is here!

Inflow and updrafts in the QLCS is typically pretty smooth while the convective downdrafts and outflow are high spectrum width. Interesting look in cross sections through the storm system when the line is well developed.

I always love it how clearly the leading edge of the QLCS shows up on spectrum width. All the turbulence! Followed by somewhat laminar flow right behind the leading convection.
