It's been years now and nobody's been able to solve the two major problems: 1) They can't make it stop creating answers from whole cloth 2) They can't make it stop giving wrong answers even when the data provided it accurate. Those problems can't be fixed.

The models themselves aren't improving, either. Every iteration has brought incremental gains at best, or even regression when the companies realized they had to find some way to make them use less compute per query. Again, barring some miracle, LLMs have peaked.

Everyone keeps saying "AI isn't going away" and no, "AI" as you've come to know it is in fact going to go away. It's unprofitable and the user experience to date has been subsidized. It will never scale, and it's not getting any cheaper. And localized fragments of that tech aren't the same.
