I am reading Trace Elements by Ada Palmer and Jo Walton. How fascinating to learn (among many other things) the history behind my becoming a SF fan by buying books on wire racks with my allowance money in the local drugstore so long ago. What a wonderful book. @adapalmer.bsky.social

So one of the things pll should be taught in grad school is that if you see the same supposition or phrase repeated in every publication on a topic, see if you can track it back to an antiquarian. Bc, more often than not, those guys were full of shit. Don't get caught out by the Chortlemuffin Effect

The Thessaly trilogy made me a Jo Walton fan, but this is the book that made me a devotee. Buy it. Read it. Love it.

A thought of "separating the art from the artist": It's a way to approach the work as an audience member, taking it entirely on its own terms. Just the art, regardless of what the artist might be like. It's not about money. If you buy it and the artist gets paid, you haven't separated shit.
