Grade A #BookReview: Blindside by Michael Mammay
My Review: After five books, my feelings about Carl Butler have not changed a bit. I STILL want to buy the man a drink. The only thing that has changed is that now Iâd try to include Mac in the drinking, in the hopes that one of them would spill something about their escapades. Just what gets put on the page is one hell of a story.

#BookReview: The Girl Who Made a Mouse From Her Grandfatherâs Whiskers by Kenneth Hunter Gordon
My Review: What would fairy tales look like on a world that, once upon a time, was settled by human colony ships? Somehow, the idea of Aesop or Bârer Fox and Bârer Rabbit, or even the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen, still being the stories that children get told to help them cope with the world or get life and morality lessons, doesnât quite work.

My Review: The witch Gretsella isnât nearly as black as she would like to be painted. Sheâs not really wicked, sheâs just really, really practical, completely blunt about it, and the field in which she grows her fucks has been barren for decades. At least until someone deposits a baby on her doorstep right next to the milk. There is a tradition about that, and Gretsella is all about tradition when she wants to be.

Today's cat picture is of George, trying his rather large best to look like a very tiny baby. He does sort of succeed. He's the same size Tuna is but Tuna always looks HUGE and George just looks long. Also, as in this picture, looks rather longingly at something-or-other. He's also looking a bit sad, but unfortunately for George and all of our cats, not nearly as sad as he'll look tomorrow morning.

Stacking the Shelves (695)
There's a little bit of everything in this stack! The three prettiest covers also manage to be pretty different from each other. I'm looking at Murder on Charity Lane, Pretenders to the Throne of God (that whole series has gorgeous covers!), and Thistlemarsh. They're all pretty, but they are definitely not pretty the same. There are two books in this stack that I absolutely did pick for their titles.

My Review: This follow-up to last yearâs delightful Murder by Memory is, well, a bit more grounded than that series opener. That grounding being more than a bit ironic, as shipâs detective Dorothy Gentleman, along with the HMS Fairweather, the ship that she is one of the detectives both for and on, is three centuries out from Earth, headed for an unknown planet that still seems to be nowhere in sight.

Because sheâs the only doctor capable of treating their ailments and injuries when their own natural advanced healing isnât enough.

My Review: When I read Symbiote, the first book in what is now called the Ice Plague Wars series, back in late 2024, the very first scary thing in the story was that it takes place in 2028 as the U.S. and China are on the brink of World War III. My Review: This interconnected collection of short stories begins, and ends, with a young woman arriving at the cozy little Marble Cafe in Tokyo to order a hot chocolate. On Thursday. Always on Thursday, always at 3 pm. It makes a delightful little treat for her, for the cafeâs manager, and for the reader as well. Because the story in between that managerâs perspective of her and her regular visits at the beginning and her perspective at the end is every bit as round as a marble, just like the cafeâs name.

How's the first day of March where you are? Do temps in the mid-70s constitute lion-like or lamb-like behavior? That's what we're supposed to get in the ATL and inquiring minds probably need to know. Personally, I think it's just that spring has sprung here, whether the calendar says so or not, but we'll see. While this picture isn't a creepy cover, it did kind of creep both Galen and I out when we saw it in real life.

My Review: Most mysteries begin with a dead body. The Monster Hunter Mysteries series, however, may be the only one that begins with a dead body that looks like it might have been mauled by Bigfoot. Or a Chupacabra. Or, in this particular case, the werewolf who has gone down in local Wisconsin legend as âthe Beast of Bray Roadâ.

My Review: I picked this up because, well, Kingfisher. Thatâs not going to surprise anyone. Howsomever, based on the blurb, I wasnât exactly sure where this one was going to fall genre-wise - and now that Iâve finished it Iâm still not sure. Snake-Eater is wrapped around the crossroads where dark fantasy forks between magical realism and outright horror. At the same time, itâs also a bit of cozy fantasy written as a love letter to the authorâs old/new home in the desert southwest.

This week's schedule fell completely to bits, because last weekend turned out to be a lot busier than I thought it was going to be. One of the things that made it so busy was running out to get our new gaming chair. Which you wouldn't think would be THAT big a deal, but it turned out to be. I'm thrilled with the chair as it's a lot more supportive for my back when I play.

Yesterday was Valentine's Day, so it seemed like a good idea to include a lovely picture of one of our little loves. She's certainly more 'beautifully' posed than last week's snap of her brother Tuna!

But taken as a whole, these works have one fantastic thing in common - in the end, they donât go to any of the places that the reader thinks they will at the beginning. I lied. They all have a second thing in common as well, and itâs that they do not tell their stories from a position of human superiority.

Reading-wise, it was a very good week. In the getting-things-done department, it was a bit less successful. I started out behind because of Monday's post, which was not what I'd originally planned. We also had insulation installers in on Wednesday and the plumbers on Friday, so more disruption than I care to have. But it was all necessary, and I'll get caught up eventually.

A- #BookReview: Nightshade and Oak by Molly OâNeill
My Review: The Nightshade AND the Oak of this historical/mythical retelling met on the fringes of a battle that was already lost, the end of a war that was passing into myth and legend even as they contended over the last bits of it. The location, at least, is fitting for them both. The Nightshade is Mallt-y-Nos, a shadowy figure out of Welsh mythology, a chooser of the slain who would have kept good company with the Morrigan and the Valkyries.

#BookReview: Stolen in Death by J.D. Robb
My Review: This 62nd entry in the In Death series was a whole lot of fun with just a bit of angst to give it spice - and an extra body or two. Well, itâs fun for the reader. In the end, itâs also fun for Dallasâ bosses, Commander Whitney and Chief Tibble, as they get to go out and arrest a murderer who really, really deserves it.

My Review: RED was code for âRetired, Extremely Dangerousâ at least according to the classic action movie (OMG only from 2010) of the same name. A movie which was based loosely on a comic book mini-series. Both the comic series and the movie were about a group of retired assassins who were still so DAMN dangerous that their former organizations put a hit out on them.

Winner, winner! Too many great books to count, but SALT BONES and THE KNIGHT AND THE MOTH come out on top. Thank you, Reading List Committee!

The Overachieversâ Book Club AKA 2026 Reading List Awards
The first rule of Book Club is: You do not talk about Book Club. However, weâve done our work for the year, so now I CAN talk about what we did this year. Specifically, THIS particular book club, otherwise known as the American Library Association RUSA CODES Reading List Council. Sometimes, in discussion, usually while celebrating AND bemoaning the literal mountain of books we have to get through in any single year, we call it the Overachieversâ Book Club.

The Sunday Post AKA Whatâs on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 2-1-26
It's our second "Winter Wonderland" weekend in a row! This is not what we moved to Atlanta for at all. But it sure is pretty as long as one is on the inside while the blizzard is OUTSIDE. But it's not completely outside as this picture of George certainly attests. The catio is fully screened in so the cats can't get out, but very small things can get in.

Stacking the Shelves (690)
This isn't exactly a "pretty" list, is it? Pretty interesting, yes. Pretty is as pretty does, perhaps. Outright pretty, not so much. Although Magic and Mischief at the Wayside Hotel and Trouble's Turn to Lose are both pretty cute and The Half Life is pretty in a realistic way. I guess they'll have to do. Very much on the other hand - or claw, as the case might be - …

A+ #AudioBookReview: Junkyard Riders by Faith Hunter
My Review: Thereâs a major snowstorm crashing down on Shiningâs head in this one - and bloody damn (as Shining herself would put it - I didnât need the up-close-and-personal reminder of whatâs headed my way in real life as it headed towards hers in brilliantly realized fiction. Iâm still here for the cats, six years and four books after the first utterly terrific book in this series, …

#BookReview: Make It Out Alive by Allison Brennan
My Review: Iâve read the Quinn & Costa series from the very first book, The Third to Die - albeit out of order. Nevertheless, Iâve found each and every book in the series to be compelling and absolutely un-put-downable in the reading - even if at the end I find myself wondering WTF happened along the way. This book turned out to be one of THOSE kinds of reads.

#BookReview: The Case of the Murdered Muckraker by Rob Osler
My Review: This is SUCH a Chicago story. Specifically a story about the "City of the big shoulders, hog butcher for the worldâ - even though Carl Sandburgâs famous poem wonât be published for another SIXTEEN years. Itâs a story about a city whose politics are so thoroughly, infamously corrupt that its reputation was already made in 1898 and persists well into the 21st century.

Grade A #BookReview: Fire Must Burn by Allison Montclair
My Review: This series began with The Right Sort of Man about two women opening a marriage bureau in post-World War II London. Miss Iris Sparks, formerly something seriously clandestine during the late war, and Mrs. Gwendoline Bainbridge, formerly a resident of a sanatorium after the death of her husband and the loss of what would have been her second child, start their agency because they both need jobs.

My Review: I want to call Prairie Nightingale (and that really is the protagonistâs name and the story behind it explains SO MUCH about her character) a domestic goddess. But thatâs not what she claims to be and thatâs not what she really is. Sheâs calm on the surface and paddling like hell underneath just like everyone else - which we know because weâre inside her head.

The Sunday Post AKA Whatâs on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 1-25-26
We're supposed to be getting an ice storm today. So I'm probably huddled under a comforter with a good book and as many cats as I can get to cooperate. Not that cats are generally all that cooperative. OTOH, it could all blow over, or pass us by, or just not be, well, all that. The last option is what we're hoping for.

Stacking the Shelves (689)
This is another one of those stacks where there's more "pretty creepy" than there is just plain "pretty". The "pretty creepy" category includes The Way It Haunted Him and The Sleeping Sisters, while Snow Kissed is kinda creepy in that it might be predicting this weekend's weather for everyone east of the Mississippi. We don't normally get that much snow here in the ATL, but we might this weekend.

My Review: Whenever I think of the Wayward Children series, I imagine of the chase scene from Monsters, Inc. that takes place in the vast, cavernous space where all the doors are stored. I want to see a place just like that in this series - but I KNOW that the doors that these wayward children go through, sometimes back through, and very occasionally stride through one more time - or even more - arenât stored that way.
