Safety nerd, travel nerd, book nerd, love nerd. Not in that order. They/them.
Only a short way in and am so delighted by this book! The thing where every Jo Walton book does its job but is also just More, weirder and stranger and cooler than you expected... I love that.

Love this news but hate the "surprise comeback" framing. Teams around the globe worked incredibly hard to protect & expand mangrove forests & it worked! Please just say, "We tried and we succeeded! Go team Earth!" We must admit our victories to give people the heart to keep trying!

a reminder that a lot of the things people find unpleasant about cities - along with the noise and dirtiness - are largely a product of filling them with cars. get rid of the cars and the pleasantness of the environment improves dramatically

I'm continually impressed at how motornormativity causes people to create a revisionist history of American cities where they sprouted up fully formed and filled with cars and parking spots. Motornormativity also causes these people to ignore the many places that have reversed car dependency.

The Kinder Scout Mass Trespass took place on this day 1932, organised by Manchester communist leader and Jewish anti-fascist Benny Rothman, secretary of the British Workers' Sports Federation. The Peak District was designated the UK’s first national park in April 1951.

This is a sentiment you hear a lot from now-elderly people who grew up without a lot of material comforts. Their perceptual and material worlds were pretty well aligned! Now we basically all live in the perceptual world of the wealthy. It’s hard to imagine anyone not knowing what they don’t have.

Fire deaths ARE quite rare: because we have improved and increased our knowledge of fire safety measures and implemented additional requirements through regulation. Fuck ALL the way off with this.
