It’s not even this. They see themselves as critics of critics of political actors, like the people who do reaction videos of themselves watching reactors reacting to something. They go to a diner in Ohio (and only ever there) and ask the people there what they think of political actors acting.

At a basic level, party leaders have collectively raised billions of dollars in political spending, the great bulk of which has been directed to ads instead of permanent organizing or media infrastructure. Generational strategic failure regardless of policy preferences and ideology. RIP OFA.
