Had a great Father’s Day. I went for an early-morning swim, was not smoked by some teen in the swim team. Concerningly, the kids gifted me my first-ever pair of Birkenstocks. Plus, of course, a handmade coaster. The killer tan got tanner. I mostly succeeded at not thinking about the Supreme Court.

Just acquired: two tiny pamphlet printings of the preliminary and final Emancipation Proclamation, published in Boston in December 1862 and January 1863. Made to be distributed freely and to be carried south by Union soldiers and given, in particular, to formerly enslaved men who might enlist.

This is the case, similar to the case of Maureen Comey, where the Trump administration is invoking Article II, and nothing else, to bypass the Civil Service Reform Act and allow it to fire people who otherwise enjoy civil service protections—which are unconstitutional if they tie president’s hands.

As the government raids “antifa groups” in Minneapolis with the SAME charges levied against myself and the rest of the Broadview Six, we need to be asking how they got this indictment. And as charges (hopefully) get dropped, we must remember the process is the punishment.

Louisiana v. Callais is a neo-Confederate ruling and easily the most anti-democratic decision of my lifetime, several times over. The people who wrote our foundational law would be horrified at how the Supreme Court has mangled it, all in service of the lie that the Constitution is colorblind.

For the first time in history, I think, six justices on the Supreme Court sign on to an idea that ours is a "colorblind Constitution." And it did so in explaining the meaning of Louisiana v. Callais, allowing the state of Alabama to eliminate a Black-majority congressional district. Dark stuff.

Telling SCOTUS that Alabama can’t push through its racist maps because it’s too busy honoring Jefferson Davis’s Birthday is perhaps the best thing I’ve ever read. That we’re here because Clarence Thomas ignored Alabama’s request for a SCOTUS decision by this morning is just the cherry on top.
