The only reason the Supreme Court of the United States is now examining the legality of a mail ballot receipt law is that Donald Trump is an election denier who still can’t his loss, and Republican lawyers have decided to legitimize and sanewash that denialism as a matter of federal election law.

Emphatic co-sign. Some law is complicated, and benefits from judicial explication. But it’s a category error to think that all law is unknowable until a court steps in.

For what it's worth: The illegality of something doesn't depend on whether that something can be challenged in court, or whether some lawyer said so. People can read and experience things and can call them what they are. People can demand illegal things be stopped even when no court steps in.
