I had an illuminating interaction with a colleague who said that they try to find time to do a few paper reviews per year. It made me realize that different researchers have widely varying expectations about reviewing, probably because there are no public norms.

That episode encapsulates the problem. 'Doing something' means doing nothing (going to a party ostensibly as part of your adminstrative duties), and 'nothing I can do' means doing something (exploiting the vulnerability of teaching staff).

I asked the dean what his university was doing to improve the job security and pay of adjunct faculty (their pay for a semester of work could be less than the cost of sending the dean to this party). He expressed his sympathies with their plight but basically said that there was nothing he could do.

One of my favorites findings of all time. Patient D.F. cannot recognize objects, yet she can grasp them appropriately. However, if you add a 2 second memory period, she can’t do it anymore! (Goodale et al. 1994)
