Maybe others will disagree, but Having seen the show, I would argue Academy doesn’t run away from queerness. Jet Reno overtly talks about being a lesbian (& has a relationship I won’t spoil). And the Klingon characters sexuality it’s not overly stated but the show makes it quite obvious by ep5.

Not the skant, but skirts on boys! Could arguably be seen as kilt but this character doesn’t have Scottish heritage. That said, it is interesting that only the queer boy wears a skirt and not the other male protagonists.
