In authoritarian crackdowns, it’s important to randomly ensnare some people whom one would think would be safe, so that everyone is at least a little bit afraid that something could happen to them. The regime scales up its power of intimidation over a much larger group than those directly affected.

You can't teach U.S. history without "divisive" narratives. Slavery wasn't "unifying." The Japanese incarceration wasn't "unifying." The anti-immigrant Operation Wetback (real name) wasn't "unifying." It's history's job to tell the truth, not cover up past racism to pave the way for future racism.

Finished two books yesterday: Everyone Wants to Rule the World Except Me by Django Wexler: easiest read of the year. Really fun but so vapid at times. Enjoyed it more than the first because I knew what to expect and how not to approach it. But good god does it read like a 2010s Deadpool comic.
