Fascinating lesson for future attempts to dismantle liberal democracy. Trumpism is failing because his despotism is geared toward delivering a super unpopular, decades old Republican policy agenda. Regime change wars abroad, swingeing cuts at home.

The Religious Right is desperate these days to pretend that "Christian Nationalism" is (1) a recently-invented term and (2) a pejorative invented by their enemies, but neither of those claims is remotely true. Here's a short thread, but I'm sure other historians will have examples too.

We needed a new shower curtain for the guest bath and let the 9yo pick the replacement, no regrets whatsoever. It brings me joy every time I walk by and we’ve named the kitten Catney Spears.

The Trump regime has removed the chapter on climate change from the "Reference manual on scientific evidence", an essential handbook for judges as they weigh evidence in court. The response of the American Meteorological Society has just been published (below).

In 1981 Doctor Who Magazine published the first comprehensive inventory of the BBC's archive, listing which Doctor Who episodes existed and were missing. 45 years on, 41 episodes have been returned to the archives. Here's a recreation of that list followed by how it stands in 2026.

Compared to US TV archive which was all privately made by networks so stuff was left to rot or even dumped into the Hudson River once eps legally expired. A lot of surviving eps are now hidden in private archives. Be glad of the BBC.

In the book they visit Asterix's cousin to aid them against the Romans, clearly at least one of Asterix's parents were British. Brittany is also why Great Britain's called that, it's not a boast. It just means big Britain to differentiate it from little Britain (Brittany) in France.

Asterix is from Armorica in France which is in Brittany, making him a Breton. The OG French title for the book Asterix in Britain calls the British Bretons. which is brilliantly confusing if you don't know Brittany in France is named after Britain, because it was colonised by the ancient British.

It's like if the only local coffee shop had--for some inscrutable reason--two rooms, one for hanging out with your friends, and one for random people continuously yelling obscenities in your face. It would not be weird to choose the first room.
