I won't defend assholes that behave poorly on any mobility device, but bikes on sidewalks are a symptom of hostile infrastructure design. No one willingly chooses the friction of sidewalk riding when proper, protected, efficient bike lanes exist. Ebikes aren't the problem, it's the infrastructure.

“Electric cars are no more dangerous for pedestrians than petrol and diesel models, researchers find.” They’re also no safer. Which reminds us that “better cars” aren’t the main answer to the consequences of cars. The main answer is fewer (and smaller) cars driven less frequently in better cities.

Driverless taxis won’t save our car-dependent cities, but in the meantime I feel a lot safer around them than human drivers.

It’s important to contextualize just how much less safe American drivers are than everywhere else in the world, and it’s getting worse!

Regular reminder that the most dangerous thing most people do every day is get in a car, and it's something that is rarely talked about by the average person, let alone our politicians. This is an escalating problem, we can all see it, and there is very little political will to address it.

As I never tire of reminding people, the two plausible alternatives to automated traffic enforcement are that we either rely on the discretion of individual police officers or we simply don't enforce traffic laws at all. We have been trying both alternatives now and they are failing us.

Part of the disconnect is that car-brained nonprofit types think they're simply preventing state violence when they oppose commonsense attempts to deter reckless driving. Doesn't occur to them that what they're doing is maintaining the current, very bad society-wide distribution of violence.

There's a thing I think is going on that we don't have a word for yet, at least I don't. I think it's one of the less noticed themes of 2025, actually.
