Reflections on relational pedagogy from Innovation Scholars at #McrMetL&TConf25. Rod Cullen argues for empathising with students (many caring, working, commuting, digital poverty, disabilities), & need to support through accessibility, flexibility and authentic assessment (key to our DELTA strategy)

Chaired a #McrMetL&TConf25 session on 'Enhancing student-student and student-staff relational pedagogy through simulation games': Emma Stringfellow, Ashley McCoy & Christopher Mitchell shared how simulation blends digital and in-person groupwork, facilitates authentic assessment & develops skills.

Stacey Gillespie and Emma Holt presented on embedding opportunities for immersive learning and transforming employability, equity and student success (clear evidence of impact). Student Mahnoor Mahmood Shaheen also reflected on how CPD opportunities had transformed her own journey. #McrMetL&TConf25

Day 1 of the Manchester Met Learning and Teaching Conference 2025, with theme of building an excellent student experience through relational education. Inspirational keynote from Prof. Jason Arday starting us off, arguing for purpose and kindness being at the heart of all we do. #McrMetL&TConf25

Great interactive presentation at #McrMetL&TConf25 from Anne Everett and Mark Burgess about their partnership approach to supporting students' AI and Information Literacy skills (academic and library colleagues co-delivering, which led to great engagement and positive feedback from the students.

Next at #McrMetL&TConf25 David Yarwood presented rationale for embedding Adobe Express for portfolio development (industry-standard, supports visual storytelling, enables personalised outputs). Students Katherine Hornsey & Abigail Tait articulated benefits of Express for developing digital skills.

Today (15th May) is Global Accessibility Awareness Day and a good opportunity to signpost Manchester Met colleagues to our team's revised Digital Accessibility and Inclusion guidance area on our intranet pages. Don’t just say DEI as if it’s a bad word. Spell it out. Say diversity, which is the lifeblood of American society & culture & innovation. Say equity, which a just society should pursue. Say inclusion, because decent people believe in increasing belonging, not isolating people who are different.

6. **Access to Resources**: Make sure students know about mental health resources that are culturally competent. Having the right support can make all the difference. 7. **Celebrate Culture**: Organize fun events that celebrate Black culture and heritage. AND DO NOT WAIT UNTIL FEBRUARY TO DO IT!!!!

4. **Build Trusting Relationships**:Show your students that you care about their lives and experiences. Trust is key! 5. **Partner with Families and Communities**: Reach out to families and local organizations to better understand the cultural context of your students.

3. **Diverse Resources Matter**: Bring in books, articles, and materials that reflect the rich diversity of Black culture. When students see themselves represented, it helps them feel proud and connected.

2. **Encourage Open Conversations**: Let’s create safe spaces for students to talk about their identities and experiences. Open dialogue about race and culture can make a huge impact.

1. **Get to Know Their Stories**: Take the time to learn about the cultural backgrounds of your students. Understanding their experiences can help you create a welcoming environment where they feel valued.
