While the West shops, Persian tradition, Shab-e Yalda,the longest, darkest night of the year. You stay up, eat pomegranates (symbolizing the glow of life), & read poetry (Hafez) to ward off evil entities until sunrise. It is a vigil. The light does not return by accident; you must wait for it.

I watch Home Alone every year and think about Robert Blossoms, who played Old Man Marley, and how he was a poet for much of his life. (What a name for a poet) His work is sadly very hard to find and not archived well. A 2003 SF Gate profile on him has pieces of it. www.sfgate.com/entertainmen...
