The issue is because they know Dems will not be violent and destructive the way the GOP base will be. They are also all related to, married or friends with more people in the GOP than the Dems, so it is easy for them to walk away from their voters.

Democratic party leadership has been on autopilot for ten years, they weren't losing to fascism, fascism isn't popular enough for them to lose to fascism, they were allowing it to fill the void where their leadership should have been. Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.
