Mathematician John Conway was born

in 1937. 🧪 He made broad and profound contributions across all of mathematics, but he is maybe best known by the general public for his "game of life" cellular automaton. Conway passed away in 2020, from COVID-19.

Thanksgiving, a wonderful holiday where the main focus is giving thanks and then eating all the yummy food I've spent the last 3 days cooking. I hope no one goes hungry this Thanksgiving day. For those of you who are Ex-US, I hope you have a nice meal today too!

Insight Timer isn't a Buddhism app per se, but it might as well be. It isn't grifty because the free version is just fine, but you can support many excellent creators through it. I'd recommend it in addition to other apps for meditation and learning.

More proof that Sean Duffy lied when he said Trump was canceling private flights at the same rate as commercial ones. A new report shows that private jet travel saw massive increases as thousands of commercial flights were being canceled.

Pretty much all affordability discourse could benefit from just posting this chart. If you're in the better off America, all the luxury goods you want in excess are for the most part much cheaper. If you're in the poorer America, most of the shit you need to live/grow is more expensive.

So it turns out... the US air travel system was incredibly, deeply dependent on federal funding to just run day-to-day all this time, to the benefit of private airline shareholders, when everyone thinks that state-run trains are leeching off the government. Weird!

Interesting article targeting wealth inequality, and a great suggestion by the "Patriotic Millionaires". Ground all private jets during the shutdown, instead of public flights. They depend on ATC, yet pay a fraction of the taxes needed to run the FAA.

Private jets make up one in six flights handled by the FAA, and taxpayers already foot the bill for their 'jet setting,' says Patriotic Millionaires.

I don't understand how the government can tell private business what to do with their own inventory when they want to do good for their customers, yet somehow could not prevent price gouging during COVID? Make it make sense, please.

Do you remember when there was a famine in Africa and all those little kids were starving? And the Rock Stars came together and did Live Aid to feed them? Yeah, something like that to prevent kids on SNAP from going hungry over the Holidays would be good right about now...

From a food bank staff member: Please donate money over cheap food. They have more purchasing power than you do and can do more with it. You can donate your free turkeys tho. :) For every meal donated by a food bank, 9 meals are donated by SNAP; the increase in demand will be crushing.

If you are in one of the states that didn't turn on emergency funding for SNAP beneficiaries, please consider donating to your local food pantry. They are going to get slammed with requests in the coming weeks. And if you itemize your tax return, it should be tax deductible.
