I really appreciate this Lindy West deep dive from Ashley: dense, fair, empathetic to Lindy, and proportionate about the context of her work (seriously, it feels like every other write-up of her book was from some smarmy loser who never got over Jezebel calling them a TERF in 2015.)

lindy west can't kill millennial feminism but she can show us how little we gain from making the personal political when the personal is driven by social media engagement

i will keep talking about adult braces actually because i see the bigger picture now. we get this book to go viral, to sell. it makes so much money, she can afford to pay 4 years of alimony. it's a long way out but we can get her there.

in the nytimes interview lindy said she wanted to have a baby and grow old with aham and by the end of adult braces she is the baby to her husband and his gf as they all grow old together in her house, kinda beautiful if you don't think about it

I finally read this, after bookmarking it. Getting a poly perspective on Lindy’s book is so necessary, given that poly relationships are still generally regarded as “fuckin’ around.” (I have been both monogamous and non-.) If you want a clear-eyed, no-nonsense, no-BS analysis, this is a good one.

OK I read this, which everybody seems to agree is the one good take on Lindy West, and now I’m done.

Love this tbh. I've known so many women that have beat themselves up because some MAN told them that being poly was progressive. That monogamy is ownership. That they're faking their identity (anarchist/queer/whatevs) unless they're poly. And that's why he should get to fuck with other women.

There is *a lot* of discourse about Lindy West's new memoir and the fact that Lindy's husband is sending hate mail to journalists covering the book is bananas. But I think this is the definitive piece on the book and the broader story.

Oh, this is actually good! Also, it embodies the spectacle of *some* nonbinary folks who use *a lot* of male privilege including in their relationships.

I really appreciated this point in the review, because it's something that a lot of the "polyamory/ENM is having a MOMENT" articles and books have missed: polyamory is literally just having a style of relationship. It is not less than that; but it certainly isn't more.

As a longtime reader/appreciator of both Ashley Ray and Lindy West, I found this piece to be the most thoughtful, most honest — and therefore most kind — take on West’s new memoir. Lots to consider, thanks to Ray’s ever astute attention, experiential wisdom, and graceful assessment.

most level headed take so far. West frames her poly marriage as some empowering progressive statement when in reality it’s just her life and polyamory isn’t inherently progressive or aspirational 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is great and captures a lot of the issues I've had with this and other nonmonogamy memoirs. Over and over it's mistakes and red flags presented as positive decisions without the distance and reflection to really understand.
